the artful dodger

Life is more artful than the poet's pen,
More slippery than the gossip's tongue,
More loving than a leg-hold trap,
More holy than the summer rose ...

And if this is so,
What refuge can cradle the orphaned child?
What remains
But to bare a naked throat
To the morning sun...

And sing?!
