keeping the children happy

The Chinese, whose anal-retentive principle of "harmony" has both created one of the world's great economies and mindlessly crushed the creativity that would advance that economy, are between a rock and a hard place.

Internet cafe in China
Weibo, the Internet version of Twitter that China's leaders had hoped to remain in command of, has ways of outflanking the limited objectives its would-be handlers desired.

"How are they going to deal with a wired, globally connected, urban middle class that is probably less likely over time to be treated like children?"
As far as I can see, the United States has coped with the same problem by creating story lines that will assure income while keeping the peasants content ... largely through the imaginative ministrations of the Republican party.
