IRS fails to challenge churches

.
The Internal Revenue Service, which has oversight of tax-exempt organizations, has for the last three years pretty much skirted investigation of churches that cross into political territory and endorse one candidate or another.

On the one hand, freedom of expression and religion.
On the other, separation of church and state.

No one could envy the IRS the task of trying to parse what is legitimate and what is not. On the other hand, when the hot potato is in your hands, it's not much good pretending that someone else is holding it.
