A friend of mine, Frank, sent along this appreciation of the Republican party's willingness to trade in its political abilities for the raucous certainties of a religion. I thought and think that it hits an unfortunate nail on the head.
The springboard for that appreciation came from a cri de coeur blog post by former GOP congressional staffer Mike Lofgren.
I found both pieces (neither of them an easy-peasy sound bite ... it may take five whole minutes to read either) as thoughtful as they were sad-making.
